Coming to Court

What should I bring?

When you come to court bring your citation (the letter telling you when to come to court) and the expenses form that accompanied it.

It may be a while before you are called into court so you may want to bring a book or magazine to pass the time.

How will I know where to go?

When you arrive report to Reception.

Court staff will direct you to a witness room. Court Officers there will be able to tell you where to wait.

You will also be able to speak to someone from the Witness Service. They will introduce themselves to you in the waiting room or you can ask court staff where you can find them.

You must not go into the courtroom itself until you are called to give evidence

How will I know when I have to give evidence?

When it is your turn to give evidence a court official will call your name and show you to the witness box in the court.

How long will everything take?

It is difficult to predict how long proceedings will take. You may be called early in the proceedings or you may have to stay all day. You should allow for being there all day.

A court official will keep you informed about the progress of your case. If you are no longer required to give evidence, for example because an accused person has changed their plea to guilty on the day of the trial, a court official will tell you that you may leave.

You must not leave the court building until a court official advises you.
